Aoki’s Consistency and Smart Adjustments Earn Him Bassmaster Open Victory at Kentucky Lake

PARIS, Tenn. — Yui Aoki put on a masterclass in consistency and decision-making to claim victory at the St. Croix Bassmaster Open at Kentucky Lake/Lake Barkley presented by SEVIIN. Over three days, the Japanese angler put together a 66-pound, 14-ounce total, edging out the field by 3 ½ pounds and punching his ticket to the 2026 Bassmaster Classic.

A Winning Formula: Consistency and Adjustments

Aoki’s approach throughout the tournament was a blend of precision and adaptability. His daily weights tell the story of his steady performance:

  • Day 1: A strong start with 24 pounds, putting him just behind early leader Jordan Hartman.
  • Day 2: Another impressive limit at 24-4, keeping him in the hunt while mixing in largemouth alongside smallmouth.
  • Day 3: A shift in location led to an 18-10 bag that secured the win.

Kentucky Lake’s fluctuating conditions tested the field, but Aoki remained dialed in from start to finish.

Key Strategy and Bait Selection

Aoki started the tournament focusing on flooded timber in the main river channel but made a key adjustment on the final day, shifting to Big Sandy Bay, south of the takeoff site. The move paid off, allowing him to continue catching quality fish.

His bait choices were just as calculated. He relied on swimbaits in white and smoke colors, a smart match for the threadfin shad that dominate the lake.

A Career-Changing Win

Along with a $50,305 payday, Aoki now has a guaranteed spot in the 2026 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Classic on the Tennessee River. The win also puts him in a strong position in the Bassmaster Elite Qualifier standings, with upcoming events at Norfork Lake (April 3-5) and Leech Lake (August 14-16) still to come.

With momentum on his side, Aoki is proving he has the skill and decision-making to compete at the highest level.
